PS I came across the same FDR quote in “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle” (pg 177) by Chris Hedges where he footnotes the original source: FDR “Message to Congress on Curbing Monopolies,” April 29, 1938. In John...

The FDR quote (from 1938?) I referred to the other night reads: …the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essen...

David, Were you planning to attend the Aug 29 EV Rally in any kind of official capacity--promoting Transition Towns or otherwise--or just as a general interest observer? I may pop in at some point as a general interest but probably won't end up st...

sounds great but I've been volunteering at Veggielution the last couple Sundays and fear I may be pretty burned out by the afternoon but I'd like to keep it open and offer a nice firm maybe...

Rather than attempt to answer the individual questions here’s a broad scatter-shot. I used to have a fairly wide range of low-level contacts over the years but most have gone stale. My peak activism phase was during the Reagan years mostly focuse...

so is it safe to assume we're actually meeting tomorrow night 6/7/09 at the Palace Cafe in Sunnyvale?

Generally Tues or Thurs would be best but I could probably make M-W-F by 7pm or so but may run a bit late. Right now I'm usually less busy around the begining and end of each month and busier toward the middle, but I'm still pretty flexible overall.

Thanks, I will definitely be checking these out. Need to start with something fairly simple first. Not really in a position to invest a lot of time and money in one of these heavy hitter courses just yet because of...well, time and money; but also because I'm not currently in any position to put much of it into practice yet and the book learning would tend to get wasted.

Thanks for the Veggielution sweat contribution! :) Sorry to hear Full Circle wasn't responsive.

Unfortunately the permaculture presence is a little weak here in San Jose. I am currently talking with a few other people about starting a South Bay guild, but right now it is just an idea.

However, there is a lot happening in surrounding areas like Oakland, Santa Cruz and San Francisco. There are frequently one day and weekend courses offered on different topics. Good places to start 'localy' would be http://www.permaculture-sf.org/ (San Francisco) and maybe http://www.conexions.org/wordpress/ (Peninsula Permaculture guild).

If you go further north into Marin, I have studied at the Regnerative Design Institute in Bolinas, and Occidental Arts and Ecology Center in Occidental. Both of these places are continually offering high quality instruction on quite a range of ecological/permacultural subjects. I highly recommend both of those organizations. It is a bit of a drive, but very much worth it.
